Biomass Torrefaction: High-Performance Process
The LMK torrefaction process is an industrial technology developed to upgrade, optimize, and standardize solid biomass fuel.
Prototype installed at the LMK Energy facility in Mazingarbe, France.
Technology: Direct-heated moving-bed reactor. Heat treatment occurs continuously inside a vertical column with counter-current flows of biomass and hot gases.
Thermal Profile: Biomass moves through an inert gas stream reaching temperatures up to 240°C (for wood).
Material Transformation: Following drying, temperature increases drive off light volatile organic compounds and degrade hemicellulose polymers, breaking down the fibrous matrix for enhanced grindability.
Discharge: Torrefied product is discharged at the base of the column and cooled.
Properties of “Green Coal” (Bio-Coal)
Refined solid fuel produced from lignocellulosic biomass (forestry or agricultural residues) serving as a drop-in replacement for fossil coal in power and heat generation.
Higher Heating Value (HHV): 20.5 – 24 GJ/t
Moisture Content: Less than 5%
Operational Advantages: Higher energy density, superior grindability, and easier handling, storage, and transport compared to raw biomass.
